the second to last film in the DC Extended Universe is a fun and excellent superhero movie about family, Latin American culture, and the responsibilities of becoming a superhero. Director Ángel Manuel Soto manages to make a movie that feels very small and contained. This means that it doesn’t make any references to previous films within the DC Extended Universe or set up any feature films, and by doing so, we get a film that has a lot to say about the Latin American community and how far you will go to protect your family. Xolo Maridueña delivers a fantastic breakthrough performance as Jaime Reyes, AKA Blue Beetle. Maridueña brings so much emotion and likeability to his performance, making Jamie Reyes a great character to root for. Bruna Marquezine gives an excellent performance as Jenny Kord, and her chemistry with Maridueña is terrific. George Lopez gives a hilarious performance as Jamie’s uncle Rudy Reyes. Susan Sarandon delivers an excellent performance as antagonist Victoria Kord. Thanks to Ángel Manuel Soto’s superb direction, fantastic action scenes, wonderful message about being there for your family, and incredible performances from Xolo Maridueña, Bruna Marquezine, Susan Sarandon, and George Lopez, “Blue Beetle” is one of the best DC films within the past few years. It should be worth mentioning that despite being in the DC Extended Universe, there’s a good chance the character could carry over to James Gunn’s DC Universe, and I hope that happens because I want to see where he goes next within this new phase of DC Films.
