Five years ago, “Joker” was released in theaters to worldwide success, receiving eleven Academy Award nominations and winning two for its score and Best Actor for Joaquin Phoenix. Following its announcement of a sequel, people were mixed on the idea of a sequel considering how the original one ended, and after seeing this film, it should have stayed as one movie. “Joker: Folie à Deux” ditches the psychological aspect of the first movie for a jukebox musical that feels so out of place you have to wonder what director Todd Phillips was thinking when he wrote the screenplay. What made the first one a masterpiece was that it challenged our minds, asking us what was real and what was not. It was building to a tense moment when Arthur Fleck became the Joker, which was haunting and unforgettable. By making it a musical, you get a film with a misguided tone that comes off as bland and uninteresting. As far as positives go, the cinematography is pretty good. After winning an Oscar for the first film, Joaquin Phoenix delivers another great performance as Arthur Fleck, AKA The Joker. Lady Gaga delivers an excellent performance as Harleen “Lee” Quinzel, AKA Harley Quinn, and has good chemistry with Joaquin Phoenix. “Joker: Folie à Deux” was a complete letdown because the first film knew what kind of story it wanted to be and ended with an ambiguous conclusion that challenged its audience. Due to its baffling choices within its direction and screenplay, “Joker: Folie à Deux” feels more like a time waster and has us asking, “Were we asking for a sequel?”.
