Serving as a direct sequel to the 1992 horror classic “Candyman,” Nia DaCosta’s latest film combines horror and social issues within the African American culture to great success while staying true to the events in the original movie. The use of puppetry and animation in scenes describing the legend of Candyman was an excellent way to tell the story of the notorious urban legend and how he terrorized people for over two hundred years. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II gives a fantastic performance as Anthony McCoy, the man saved by Virginia Madsen’s Helen Lyle when he was a baby in the original film. Abdul-Mateen II plays this character as a man who doesn’t want to go back to the past, but as he starts to uncover the secrets of Candyman, he slowly descends into madness until he becomes the Candyman himself. Thanks to Nia DaCosta’s excellent direction, fantastic screenplay led by Jordan Peele, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s incredible performance, “Candyman” is the best-updated horror sequel since 2018’s “Halloween.”
