Serving as the third film in the “Deadpool” series as well as the 34th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Deadpool & Wolverine” is an excellent step in the right direction after having a mixed bag last year. Director Shawn Levy brings Deadpool and Wolverine to the MCU by crafting a funny, entertaining, emotional film containing many easter eggs that longtime Marvel fans will recognize instantly. Ryan Reynolds delivers another fantastic performance as Wade Wilson, AKA Deadpool. Reynolds again shows that he was made for Deadpool thanks to his comedic timing and uses the fourth wall break gag to poke fun at Marvel’s past and present. Returning for the first time since 2017’s “Logan,” Hugh Jackman reprises his iconic role of James “Logan” Howlett, AKA Wolverine, and it looks like he has not missed a beat. Playing a different version of Wolverine as opposed to the one we have seen since X-Men began in 2000, Hugh Jackman brings a ton of humanity to Wolverine and comedic elements to the character. His chemistry with Ryan Reynolds is so much fun to watch, borrowing aspects of Steve Martin and John Candy from 1987’s “Planes, Trains and Automobiles.” Also delivering excellent performances in this film include Emma Corrin as primary antagonist Cassandra Nova and Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Paradox, an agent of the Time Variance Authority. Thanks to Shawn Levy’s incredible direction, excellent action scenes, and fantastic performances from Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, “Deadpool & Wolverine” is a wonderful addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as a better step to a saga that, while hasn’t been what we were hoping it would lead to an epic cinematic experience once “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” arrives to theaters in 2026 and 2027.
