Digger: Tom Cruise's newest comedy will divide audiences
The newest satirical comedy from Oscar-winning director Alejandro González Iñárritu may have a hilarious plot that comes off as a modern-day version of the classic film “Dr. Strangelove,” but once you see the movie, you’ll realize that the film has a different plot that will throw the audience completely off guard. “Digger” follows an oil tycoon who tries to save the world from a global disaster caused by his tech, but once you see what is really going on, it becomes clear the film will make you question whether that was a smart choice. Tom Cruise does a decent job of turning in a good performance in a film with material that doesn’t give him much to really wow the audience. The film also has a strong supporting cast, including Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons. “Digger” has some comedic moments and a good performance by Tom Cruise, but its storytelling betrays the promise set up in the trailer and will make you decide whether you like it; for me, it didn’t.
