In 1984, Frank Herbert’s famous sci-fi classic novel was adapted to the big screen by acclaimed director David Lynch. The film was set up to be the next “Star Wars,” but its lackluster reviews led to it underperforming at the box office and becoming one of the biggest bombs in cinema history. People have tried to remake it for years after its release but couldn’t get to the point where people saw “Dune” as unfilmable. In 2021, Denis Villeneuve directed “Dune” to critical acclaim, receiving ten Academy Awards nominations, including Best Picture, and won six. “Dune: Part Two” covers the second half of the original book and succeeds as a worthy follow-up to the first film thanks to its unforgettable characters and spectacular visuals that give us another side to the planet Arrakis that we haven’t seen before. Reprising his role from the first film, Timothée Chalamet delivers a fantastic performance as Paul Atreides, and his performance in this is even better than the first one. Other actors that return from the first film and give great performances include Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Dave Bautista as Glossu, Stellan Skarsgård as Baron Harkonnon, and Charlotte Rampling as Gaius Helen Mohiam. Zendaya and Javier Bardem also return as Chani and Stilgar and deliver excellent performances, which is great because their appearance in the first film was brief. Joining the cast to deliver outstanding performances in this film include Léa Seydoux as Lady Margot Fenring, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, and Christopher Walken as Emperor Shaddam IV. The MVP of the film goes to Austin Butler as the villain Feyd-Rautha. After taking the world by storm with his Oscar-nominated performance as Elvis Presley, Butler manages to take a character made famous by Sting and turn in a performance that is creepy, bone-chilling, and psychotic, making him one of the best villains of the decade. Thanks to Denis Villeneuve’s incredible direction, striking visuals, and fantastic performances from Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Austin Butler, “Dune: Part Two” is an absolute masterpiece and one of the rarest moments where you can say the sequel is better than the original.
