Based on the iconic story “Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus” by Mary Shelley, Guillermo del Toro's latest gothic horror film is an absolute masterpiece that, unlike previous versions of “Frankenstein”, is the first to be based on the actual novel and knocks it out of the park on the first try. Guillermo del Toro tells a story of resurrection and what it means to be human by splitting the film into two chapters and telling it from the perspectives of Dr. Frankenstein and The Monster. The result is a heartbreaking, emotional story about love, death, and forgiveness that will also have you questioning which of the two is the real monster in this film. Oscar Isaac delivers an excellent, gut-wrenching performance as Dr. Victor Frankenstein, the scientist who brings a Monster back to life. Still, the result sees him seen as a monster in his own right for unleashing a creature into the world. After appearing in HBO’s “Euphoria” and starring in films such as “Saltburn” and “The Kissing Booth” franchise, Jacob Elordi delivers a phenomenal performance as The Monster. Completely unrecognisable under heavy makeup, Elordi’s performance is a sad depiction of someone coming back to life and being cast out by society due to his horrifying appearance. Adding emotion to an iconic character, Jacob Elordi delivers the performance of his career, one that will land him an Oscar nomination come January. Thanks to Guillermo del Toro’s incredible direction, an excellent leading performance from Oscar Isaac, and a phenomenal Oscar-caliber performance Jacob Elordi, “Frankenstein” is once again another masterpiece from director Guillermo del Toro and when you look at his last four films which are “The Shape of Water”, “Nightmare Alley”, “Pinocchio”, and “Frankenstein”, Guillermo del Toro created one of the best runs by a filmmaker in recent years.
