Based on the real-life marriage between Agnes Hathaway and the legendary playwright William Shakespeare, and on the creation of the iconic play “Hamlet”, Chloé Zhao’s latest historical drama is a heartbreaking look at how the loss of a child can affect a mother and father, both physically and mentally. After winning Best Picture and Best Director for 2020’s “Nomadland” and receiving a mixed reaction for 2021’s “Eternals”, Chloé Zhao manages to get back to her dramatic roots by tackling a love story that, much like a Shakespeare play, is a sweet romance that turns into a sad personal tragedy. Jessie Buckley delivers an incredible and heartbreaking performance as Agnes Shakespeare. Watching the death of her son and the impact that comes with it, Buckley turns in a sad performance that comes off as believable, worthy of not just an Oscar nomination but maybe an Oscar win. Paul Mescal delivers an excellent performance as William Shakespeare. While the death of his son doesn’t give him the same depression his wife goes through, it was interesting to see how his son’s death influenced him to create one of the greatest plays of all time, known as “Hamlet”. Thanks to Chloé Zhao’s incredible direction and the fantastic performances from Paul Mescal and, especially, Jessie Buckley, “Hamnet” is an unforgettable and tragic story that showcases the star power of both actors and why they are two of the best working today.
