Before Lin-Manuel Miranda changed musical history forever with “Hamilton,” he made his first musical in 2008 called “In The Heights” and won best musical at the Tony Awards. After seeing this movie, I understood why. “In The Heights” is a phenomenal musical about the importance of family and chasing your dreams within the Washington Heights neighborhood located in New York City’s Upper Manhattan. The music by Lin-Manuel Miranda is fantastic, and the choreography and direction by John M. Chu are outstanding. The music in this movie serves as a great way to tell an incredible story and discuss the important themes of family, love, and chasing your dreams. The ensemble cast includes Anthony Ramos, Corey Hawkins, Leslie Grace, Melissa Barrera, Olga Merediz, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Gregory Diaz IV, and Jimmy Smits. “In The Heights” is a musical that inspires people that when life gets you down, you just got to keep moving forward to overcome many obstacles in your path to achieving your hopes and dreams. Thanks to the incredible music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, fabulous direction by John M. Chu, and fantastic performances from Ramos, Hawkins, Grace, and Barrera, “In The Heights” is not only one of the best musicals within the past few years but is also one of the best movies of the year and establishes Lin-Manuel Miranda as one of the best entertainers working today in film and Broadway.
