Nickel Boys: A great coming of age film from newcomer RaMell Ross

Based on the 2019 novel of the same name, the newest coming-of-age drama from newcomer RaMell Ross is a fantastic story about surviving an abusive reform school in Florida during the 1960s. RaMell Ross does an excellent job of telling a story about friendship and survival through his incredible screenplay and direction. The choice to have the movie be presented from a first-person point-of-view was a great filmmaking idea because it allows the audience to experience the life and journey that our main characters go through, and it’s a filmmaking style I would like to see more people try in the future. Ethan Herisse and Brandon Wilson deliver excellent performances as the two boys who work together to survive the harsh environment of the abusive reform school, which eventually leads to them trying to devise a plan to escape their never-ending nightmare. Thanks to RaMell Ross’s incredible direction and screenplay and fantastic performances from Ethan Herisse and Brandon Wilson, “Nickel Boys” is a great coming-of-age film that establishes RaMell Ross as one of the best new filmmakers from this past year.
