Obsession: One of the best films of the year is also an instant horror classic

You know what they say, be careful what you wish for, and in the case of “Obsession,” this film from start to finish doesn’t mess around. The newest psychological horror film is an absolute masterpiece from first-time director Curry Barker, as the idea of wishing someone to fall in love with you is taken to a dark, disturbing turn through the film’s incredible screenplay and scary moments that aren’t cheap jump scares but are very inventive. Michael Johnston delivers an excellent performance as a man who buys a toy and wishes his friend would fall in love with him, with unforeseen consequences. Inde Navarrette delivers a phenomenal breakthrough performance as Nikki Freeman, a girl who, through a wish, is forced to fall in love with her friend, and the results are horrifying to witness. Navarrette’s performance is remarkable because you take an innocent girl who has done nothing to deserve this treatment, and you transform her into a psychotic killer who wants to be with one person. What is also interesting is that it’s easy to call her the villain of the movie. Still, given the circumstances, she feels more like a helpless victim, despite never noticing it, and that feels scary when you realize it. Thanks to Curry Barker’s incredible direction and a phenomenal breakthrough performance from Inde Navarrette, “Obsession” is a modern horror classic and a strong contender for one of the best films of the year.
