Forty-nine years ago, a young producer named Lorne Michaels arrived at NBC studios to pitch a live sketch comedy show about a group of unknown comedians dubbed “The Not Ready for Prime Time Players” in the hopes of dethroning “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.” Today's show, known by many as “Saturday Night Live,” was an instant hit, becoming an instant classic, and is celebrating its milestone fifty season. The latest biographical film from director Jason Reitman is a fantastic retelling of the 90 minutes before they went on the air for the first time. Reitman films the movie in real-time to make the audience feel the stress and anxiety that the cast and crew thought on the day that changed television forever. The production design, cinematography, and costumes look fantastic, capturing the look and feel of 1970s New York. After playing young Steven Spielberg in “The Fabelmans,” Gabriel LaBelle delivers another tremendous performance as Lorne Michaels. LaBelle’s take on the longtime producer of SNL is depicted as a man whose back is against the wall by the entire studio and who is trying his best to keep everything to establish himself as a comedic genius. While Gabriel LaBelle is the star of the film, the rest of the ensemble cast deliver excellent performances as well, which includes Rachel Sennott as Rosie Shuster, Cooper Hoffman as Dick Ebersol, Kaia Gerber as Jacqueline Carlin, Willem Dafoe as David Tebet, J. K. Simmons as Milton Berle, Jon Batiste as Billy Preston, Matthew Rhys as George Carlin, and Nicholas Braun as both Andy Kaufman and Jim Henson. The actors selected to play the original cast members not only delivered incredible performances but also looked just like them, which includes Cory Michael Smith as Chevy Chase, Ella Hunt as Gilda Radner, Dylan O’Brien as Dan Aykroyd, Emily Fairn as Laraine Newman, Matt Wood as John Belushi, Lamorne Morris as Garrett Morris, and Kim Matula as Jane Curtin. As a longtime fan of the show, “Saturday Night” is one of the best films of the years because it shows how one underdog will defy the odds to get his show on the air and go down as one of the greatest shows of all time and that is thanks to Jason Reitman’s incredible direction and fantastic performances from the ensemble cast led by Gabriel LaBelle.
