The sequel to the 2019 superhero movie brings back its lovable protagonist but dumps him into a sequel missing some of the original movie's charm. Director David F. Sandberg returns to direct "Shazam! Fury of the Gods." While the film features many great action scenes and hilarious moments, the movie's tone is more serious than its predecessor in affecting its pacing within the story. In addition to the action and comedy scenes, the other element that makes this film enjoyable is the characters and their performances. Asher Angel and Zachary Levi reprise their lead role as Billy Batson, AKA Shazam, and both deliver an outstanding performance once again. Also returning from the first film to aid our main hero and perform pretty well in the supporting cast are Djimon Hounsou as the wizard and Billy's foster siblings who make up the Shazam Family, which includes Jack Dylan Grazer and Adam Brody as Freddy Freeman, Ian Chen and Ross Butler as Eugene Choi, Joven Armand, and D. J. Cotrona as Pedro Peña, Faithe Herman and Meagan Good as Darla Dudley, and Grace Caroline Currey as both Mary Bromfield and her adult superhero form. In Greek mythology, Rachel Zegler, Lucy Liu, and Helen Mirren portray the roles of Anthea, Kalypso, and Hespera, known as Atlas' daughters. All three women give excellent performances as the three gods who have their ways on how they see the natural world and if they see it as an ally or a threat. "Shazam! Fury of the Gods" may not be as good as the first film. Still, it manages to come off as an above-average yet fun sequel, and that is thanks to its incredible action scenes, hilarious moments, and great performances from Asher Angel, Zachary Levi, Jack Dylan Grazer, Grace Caroline Currey, Djimon Hounsou, Rachel Zegler, Lucy Liu, and Helen Mirren.
