Sing Sing: A film about prisoners and performance art is also one of the best films of the year

Based on the real-life Rehabilitation Through the Arts program at the Sing Sing Maximum Security Prison, the newest film from A24 is a fantastic drama that comes off as an impressive documentary about prisoners finding a way to stay out of crime forever. Director Greg Kwedar not only does a great job at showing the transformation the prisoners go through thanks to the program, but it comes off as realistic because all of the actors in this movie, minus Colman Domingo and Paul Raci, were portrayed by real-life prisoners that were part of the program when they were serving time. Colman Domingo gives a fantastic performance as the main prisoner who created the program to help out the inmates while seeking approval for parole. Clarence “Divine Eye” Maclin, a prisoner who participated in the program while serving time, delivered an excellent performance as the newest member of the theatre company. Thanks to Greg Kwedar’s incredible direction and fantastic performances from Colman Domingo and Clarence “Divine Eyes” Maclin, “Sing Sing” is an inspiring and unforgettable story about changing your life so you don’t go back to a life of crime once you get released from prison making this one of the best films of the year.
