Serving as the second film in the DC Universe from DC president James Gunn, the latest comic book movie adapted from “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” is not a perfect film but still manages to provide a ton of fun this summer. Known for directing films such as “Lars and the Real Girl”, “I, Tonya”, and “Cruella”, Craig Gillespie does a decent job with the next film in the DC Universe, though there were times when I felt the film played it a little too safe. Regardless, the film does an excellent job of showing you who Supergirl is as a character and why she is different from Superman through flashbacks, making her very interesting. After making a cameo at the end of last year's “Superman”, Milly Alcock makes her official debut as Kara Zor-El AKA Supergirl. She delivers an excellent performance in this film. As the third interpretation of the character on film, following Helen Slater and Sasha Calle, Alcock takes the character to a place we haven’t seen before, and her character development throughout the film is amazing to watch. The film also contains a great supporting cast, all turning in great performances, which includes Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze, David Corenswet returning briefly as Superman, and Jason Momoa, who, after playing Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe, joins this new franchise but this time playing the role of Lobo. “Supergirl” may not be the best superhero movie of all time, but thanks to an excellent breakthrough performance from Milly Alcock, the film delivers a strong leading lady, and I am excited to see where they take her next in the DC Universe.
