Based on the real-life story of the early rise of businessman and former US president Donald Trump, “The Apprentice” is a fascinating character study about one man’s quest to become one of the most powerful men on earth even if it means to betray the people who helped you get there. Director Ali Abbasi does a great job at giving you an inside look at how far one man will go to achieve his goals for better or worse. The setup of this film plays out like a modern-day version of the classic “Citizen Kane” because both Charles Foster Kane and Donald Trump had a vision of a future where they would have wealth, power, and political ambitions, but whereas Trump succeeded, Kane failed. Sebastian Stan delivers a fantastic and unrecognizable performance as Donald Trump. While we have seen many depictions of Trump, particularly in comedic fashion, on “Saturday Night Live,” Stan’s take on the controversial figure is a character that believes that he has a plan for the future. While it’s a great plan, his actions have consequences that affect the people he loves and himself. Sebastian Stan may be known by many as Bucky Barnes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Still, Stan did an excellent job in a dramatic role that shows his range as an actor we’ve been waiting to see for a long time and accomplishes it with flying colors. Thanks to Ali Abbasi’s excellent direction and an incredible performance by Sebastian Stan, “The Apprentice” is a fantastic biopic that is not afraid to hide from the truth to tell a great story and establishes Sebastian Stan as one of the best actors working today. The last thing I’m going to leave you with is that I can understand that due to people’s beliefs on politics and whether you support Trump or not, this film will not be for everyone, and that’s ok. As someone who doesn’t support Trump, I believe that it is important to hear from both the left and right because people have different opinions, and while we might not be on the same page, we should at least hear them out, and if we can’t, then we will just have to agree to disagree.
