The Bride!: Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale are excellent in the newest gothic romantic film

You know those movies you see where they get mixed reviews, but for reasons unknown, you walk away liking the film. This feels like one of those times. “The Bride!” is the newest gothic romantic film from actor-turned-director Maggie Gyllenhaal, who does an excellent job of giving us a romance about two people who desire to be together and not be forever alone, even if there are story elements that don’t work in this film. Coming off her directorial debut with 2021’s “The Lost Daughter”, Maggie Gyllenhaal moves from directing a small independent film to a high-budget monster movie whose greatest strength is its focus on the characters and the struggles they face. Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale deliver excellent performances as The Bride and Frankenstein’s Monster, and they have great chemistry between the two of them. The film also features strong performances from the supporting cast, including Peter Sarsgaard, Annette Bening, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Penélope Cruz. “The Bride!” may not win everybody over due to its pacing issues and convoluted screenplay, but “The Bride!” will win a select group of people over, myself included, thanks to Maggie Gyllenhaal’s excellent direction and incredible performances from Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale.
