Based on the Spanish comedy film “The People Upstairs”, “The Invite” is an excellent drama film that is a modern-day combination of classic Woody Allen films and the Broadway play “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” After having success as a director with 2019's “Booksmart” but then following it up with the 2022 disaster “Don’t Worry Darling”, Olivia Wilde makes a career comeback by directing and starring in A24’s best film of the year in a story about love, lust, and drama. Set in a small apartment and starring only four actors, the film feels like a Broadway play by letting you into the characters’ lives and the dilemmas their personalities create among them. All four actors deliver fantastic performances in this movie: Seth Rogen, Olivia Wilde, Penélope Cruz, and Edward Norton. Thanks to Olivia Wilde’s excellent direction and fantastic performances from the ensemble cast, “The Invite” is an incredible film from A24. Given its similarities to the Broadway classic “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,” the film feels like we are watching an incredible Broadway show rather than a movie.
