Based on the popular video game franchise from Nintendo, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is a fun animated film that celebrates the iconic character but aims more at kids than adults. The animation looks great, and the easter eggs sprinkled throughout the movie are funny and cool. However, the screenplay lacks a ton of character development, and certain scenes feel rushed, not giving enough time to flesh out the characters. Despite turning in a pretty good performance as Mario, Chris Pratt’s voice for the character is incredibly distracting, making it feel like more of an impression than an actual performance. Jack Black delivers a fantastic performance as the main villain, Bowser, completely disappearing into the role to the point where he is almost unrecognizable. Also delivering great performances within the voice acting department include Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” will connect more with children. Still, longtime fans of the “Super Mario Bros” franchise will be happy enjoying the film as a fan service movie, thanks to its gorgeous animation, excellent easter eggs, and great performances by its ensemble cast, with the standout being Jack Black as Bowser.
