Based on the true story of the Dahomey Kingdom during 19th century West Africa, Gina Prince-Bythewood’s latest historical epic is a fantastic film that will have you glued to the screen from start to finish. Gina Prince-Bythewood’s direction is gorgeous, capturing the tensions of the war through its scenery and cinematography. Viola Davis delivers a phenomenal performance as the Agojie general and commands the film with an iron fist. Thuso Mbedu gives an excellent breakthrough performance as the young new soldier trained by Viola Davis and manages to stand toe to toe with one of the greatest actresses of all time. The supporting cast, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, and John Boyega, all give great performances in the film. Thanks to Prince-Bythewood’s direction, impressive action sequences, and a fantastic performance by Viola Davis, “The Woman King” is an absolute masterpiece and is Gina Prince-Bythewood’s best film since her debut film “Love & Basketball.”
