Based on the real-life story of famed culinary chef Anthony Bourdain, director Matt Johnson’s latest coming-of-age drama offers an excellent look at how one man becomes one of the greatest chefs of all time. Director Matt Johnson does a great job showing how one person can have a dream, but because of their arrogance, that dream will never come true. Unbeknownst to them, they discover that a certain task they never thought they'd be good at, such as cooking, will ultimately become their true calling, and the character development displayed on screen is perfect. After appearing in 2023’s “The Holdovers,” Dominic Sessa delivers a fantastic performance as world-famous chef Anthony Bourdain. Portraying Bourdain as cocky and arrogant, Sessa does an excellent job showing who Bourdain was; by the end of the movie, he becomes a much different person than when he started, displaying fantastic character development. The film also features great performances from the supporting cast, which includes Emilia Jones, Leo Woodall, and Antonio Banderas. Thanks to Matt Johnson’s incredible direction and Dominic Sessa's fantastic performance, “Tony” is an excellent biopic that shows people that not everything will work out how you want it to. Still, in the end, your backup plan might be your calling in life, and the film captures the ups and downs of Anthony Bourdain’s early life and how he went on to become one of the greatest culinary chefs of all time.
