Thirty-six years since the action classic “Top Gun,” Tom Cruise returns to the role that made him the worldwide movie star you see today. “Top Gun: Maverick” is an absolute masterpiece because it uses a significant plot point from the original movie and shows us how this one moment affected many of the characters nearly four decades later. Reprising his role from the original film, Tom Cruise delivers a phenomenal performance as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Cruise portrays Maverick as a veteran soldier that can’t escape from his past but must figure out how to move on to train a new group of fighters. Miles Teller delivers a fantastic performance as Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s deceased friend Goose and serves as the final test for Maverick to accept Goose’s death and move on. Cruise and Teller have fantastic chemistry with each other mirroring the relationship that Tom Cruise and Anthony Edwards had back in 1986. Providing great performances in the supporting cast include Jennifer Connelly, Glen Powell, Ed Harris, Jon Hamm, Lewis Pullman, Monica Barbaro, and Val Kilmer reprising his role of Tom “Iceman” Kazansky. Joseph Kosinski’s direction is an adrenaline rush of emotions ranging from heartbreaking and action-packed, balanced perfectly. “Top Gun: Maverick” is an incredible legacy sequel that surpasses the original because it uses the passage of time to illustrate how one person’s life has changed due to the death of his friend and how he wasn’t able to move on afterward. Thanks to Joseph Kosinski’s fantastic direction, emotional story, incredible stunts and action scenes, excellent soundtrack composed by Lady Gaga, and phenomenal performances by Tom Cruise and Miles Teller, “Top Gun: Maverick” is an absolute masterpiece and a perfect reminder of why Tom Cruise is considered the most excellent movie star in the history of cinema.
